How to: Break in new shoes from our Fashion Expert

May 22, 2009 by Cozy Amanda

It’s that time where I ditch the boots and socks and break out my new flats and sandals! I am the type of person that unfortunately has a "breaking in" period with every new pair of shoes I get.  They can be flats or heels, leather or canvas and the first few runs are just not always fun.  If you are like me and have to experience this with every new pair of shoes, then read on!

1) Shoes should feel okay the minute you try them on at the store or at home.  If a part of the shoe is digging in, or if you feel some pinching, sorry but these are not the right shoes or shoe size for you!  Any initial pain right off the bat will only make your breaking in period a lot worse.

2) Try to avoid your first day wearing your new shoes on the day of an important event, a day you will be walking a lot or standing on your feet.  If you really must wear them for an event, bring a pair of flats to change into.

3) The minute you feel rubbing, don’t put on a band-aid, instead use Dr. Scholl’s Moleskin.  This stuff is great – it sticks right on and you can cut out how much you want to use from a sheet that will last you a while.

4) Use a friction balm such as Band-Aid Active Friction Block to avoid excess rubbing which leads to cuts.

5) Treat your feet’s long hard day with some Dr. Scholl’s Ultra Overnight Foot Cream

6) After some continuous use, your shoes should start to feel broken in and your feet will become accustomed to the shoes.  Remember, no shoe is worth excessive pain, no matter how cute they are!  If you find your breaking in period is never ending, it is most likely the shoes, not you!  But don’t worry, there is a sea of shoes for you to choose from that are right for your feet.
