Exfoliation from our Beauty Expert
So, I know we’ve established that we all need to exfoliate at least one a week right? Well, kumquats, the eternal dilemma is, of course, whether to choose a physical exfoliant, (e.g. scrub), or a chemical exfoliant. Here’s the difference: physical scrubs use tiny particles, sometimes round and smooth, sometimes broken and jagged, to buff away the dead skin cells on the surface of our faces. Chemical exfoliators, on the other hand, use alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs, like glycolic, citric, or lactic acid to dissolve the dead skin. If you have sensitive skin, stay away from the AHAs, which can be irritating. If you have acne, put that scrub down! The scrubbing agents spread bacteria and can make breakouts worse. For everyone else, feel free to experiment; as long as you’re exfoliating, I’m proud of you!
A note from our Beauty Expert – Make-up Store Etiquette
Hello world! Cari Cozy here, from the Cosmetic corner on Cozy Wallet. Today I want to talk about an issue that affects all of us—make-up store etiquette. Have you ever walked out of a cosmetics store feeling disparaged, like you wasted time, weren’t treated very well, or didn’t get the most for your money? Well kittens, listen up! I’m going to give you a few pointers on how to make the most of your buying experience and be an effective and efficient shopper.
The first rule of thumb is to come prepared. If you know what you’re in the market for, or even better, know of a specific product you want to buy, you make finding it or helping you find it much easier. Don’t feel foolish about bringing in pictures or old products to show the salespeople; those specific items help them narrow their search down by hundreds of products. Even if it’s something that’s been discontinued or a brand the store doesn’t carry, if they have the color in front of them, they can match it much more easily to something they do have. Keep in mind, with the thousands of products each store stocks, you’re allowed to be picky—just ask!
Another tip that will help you get to where you want to be much faster is to be direct with both your intent and your questions. This includes what you’re looking for, what your concerns are, and especially, whether or not you want to buy anything. Honestly, if you just want a makeover but don’t want to spend money, the best way to go about that is by picking out a couple products that you want to try and then asking a makeup artist to try them on you. If you’re truthful about just wanting a new look, she’ll be more likely to indulge you than if you pretend to plan to buy a ton of products and “change your mind” after the consultation is over.
Likewise, you can be honest with the sales associates about what concerns you, whether it’s your cosmetics or your skin—they’ve heard it all. The more up front you are about what restrictions or sensitivities you have, the easier it is for them to eliminate products that are unsuited for your skin type. Too embarrassed to admit you have acne and wrinkles? Chances are they’ve already picked up on it, and mentioning it outright saves everyone the embarrassment of skirting around the subject.
Speaking of restrictions, it’s okay to mention what your budget is. Most stores carry lines for every price range—they will more often than not have something to suit your needs and your wallet. There’s no shame in not wanting to spend $60 on a foundation; if you let the employees know that from the beginning, they’re less likely to waste time trying to sell you something that’s out of your price range.
Now here’s a big one—please, please, please be kind and courteous to the people that work in the stores, and to the products you find yourself surrounded by. The nicer you are to a consultant, the harder she’ll work to get you exactly what you came in for—and maybe more! What’s more, always treat the cosmetics as well as you would those that you find in your own bathroom. If you gouge a hole in the side of a lipstick because you don’t want to put it directly on your lips, you render it useless to anyone else that might like to try the same shade. Again, if you’re unsure about how to properly test a product or how to sanitize something, just ask someone. The information will serve you better in the long run and make it easier on the people who work there.
Finally, pumpkins, my number one rule for make-up shopping, (which you can probably guess from how many times I’ve mentioned it), if you’re unsure about anything, just ask! You’ll get your question answered and save everyone around you, including yourself, time and energy. The employees at these stores are there to help and to inform you about anything you’re unsure of; they have been trained well and are prepared for almost anything you can throw at them—provided that it’s beauty related!
While I can’t guarantee that you won’t run into a sourpuss every now and then, these tips will help make your shopping experience more fruitful and enjoyable, and certainly more time-efficient.
Happy shopping!
